Research is the act of gathering information about a certain item, place, creature, or person that will play roles in an author's story. Research and knowledge are very important for developing a believable story. Good authors will not settle for a brief google search, but instead will read books and magazines, watch documentaries, and soak up information like a sponge. One advantage of fantasy and Science Fiction is that many made-up elements will be involved. However, they still must be grounded in reality and make logical sense.

Where it Comes Into Play Edit

  • An author setting their story in a specific country, state, or town will need to do research to make sure they get it right. Traveling there to see it first-hand is a very good way, but not always available.
  • An author writing a story about Greek mythology will have to read the myths and get a feel for them.
  • Any other situation.
