Breaking the Fourth Wall is a literary device in which the author deliberately refers to or addresses the reader. It is used mainly for comic relief, comedy, and stories writtern in the first-person point of view. The name comes from the practice of actors in plays addressing the audience through the imaginary fourth wall which separated the stage from the audience.
